Virtual assistant vs. personal assistant vs. personal team: an honest comparison

There are three common ways to get help with your personal life: a virtual assistant, a personal assistant you hire, or a personal team service like SuperHandled. Each suits different people. Here is a straight comparison, including where we are not the best fit.

Virtual assistants

A virtual assistant (VA) works remotely, usually as a freelancer or through an agency, and is typically paid by the hour or in monthly bundles of hours. VAs are well suited to defined, repeatable tasks: inbox and calendar management, data entry, simple research and scheduling.

The trade-offs are scope and continuity. Hour-based pricing means you ration requests or pay overages. Many VAs support several clients, and agencies may rotate who handles your work. Quality varies widely, so you often need to write clear instructions and check results.

Traditional personal assistants

A traditional personal assistant is someone you employ directly, part time or full time, often in person. You get one person's attention, someone who can be physically present for things like errands, home appointments and events.

The trade-offs are cost and responsibility. You become an employer: recruiting, salary, payroll taxes, benefits, holiday and sick-leave cover, and management time. One person also covers one skill set; if you want help with fitness planning or finances as well, that is usually outside their brief.

Personal team services

A personal team service like SuperHandled gives you a named point of contact backed by specialists. With SuperHandled, that is a Personal Concierge who coordinates your requests, supported by Fitness & Lifestyle and Finance Specialists. You pay a flat monthly fee, with service hours and response targets set out in a written agreement.

The trade-offs are exclusivity and presence. Your team supports other clients too, it is not a 24/7 service, and it does not provide a full-time employee who works only for you. In return, you get continuity, broader expertise and no hiring or management.

Which one suits you

A simple way to decide is to start from what you actually need help with.

Choose a virtual assistant
if you have a steady flow of well-defined tasks, are happy to write instructions, and want to pay only for the hours you use.
Hire a personal assistant
if you need someone in person, full time or available on your schedule, and are prepared to be an employer.
Choose a personal team
if you want arrangements, research and follow-ups handled end to end, help with personal goals as well as logistics, and one named contact without hiring anyone.

Looking for an alternative to a virtual assistant?

People usually start looking for a virtual assistant alternative after the same experience: the tasks get done, but they still have to think of every task, write every instruction and check every result. The mental load hasn't moved.

A personal team is the alternative when what you want to hand over is the remembering and the thinking ahead, not just the typing. Your Concierge learns your preferences, notices what's coming up, and brings you finished work or a single decision.

How pricing compares

Virtual assistants are usually billed hourly or in prepaid hour bundles, so the cost scales with use. Directly employed assistants cost a salary plus employer costs such as payroll taxes and benefits. Personal team services are typically a flat monthly fee.

SuperHandled is $900 a month on Personal and $1,500 a month on Plus. Both include the same team and the same core service; Plus adds priority handling. There are no hourly quotas, and we don't publish figures we haven't verified, so ask any provider you consider for their full terms in writing.

Is SuperHandled a virtual assistant service?

Not quite. A virtual assistant usually works through tasks you define, billed by the hour. SuperHandled is a personal team on a flat monthly fee: a named Personal Concierge who owns requests end to end, plus specialists for fitness and finances.

Will I have someone who works only for me?

No. Your Personal Concierge and specialists stay with you over time and also support other clients. If you need a full-time, exclusive assistant, hiring one directly is the better option.
